My mother has only one working eye. It doesn’t work particularly well but she likes to make out she doesn’t miss a trick. Recently, she was walking across her lounge room when she noticed a large insect, a huge spider or cockroach. She fetched the insect spray from the kitchen and gave it hell. The beast didn’t move so she sprayed it again. Still no response. She bent down and looked more closely. It was a chocolate-covered almond. In New Zealand, they’re called ‘scorched almonds’ and have always been a favourite of Mum’s. Now each time we’re in the supermarket, I point out the chocolate almonds to Mum and suggest she goes in for the kill.
