My 84-year-old mother is an early bird. It’s the Connell way. You get up early and you get ahead in life.
My brother was up at 3:30am today. By seven he’d driven to Auckland and done a good chunk of his day’s work. My sister is up at 5am most days as are my two other brothers.
Of course, the key to getting up early is to go to bed early, preferably before nine.
Mum went to bed at 8:30pm tonight. On her way out she reminded me that I am leaving New Zealand tomorrow.
‘Go to bed,’ she urged. ‘Don’t stay up. You’re flying tomorrow.’
My plane leaves in 23 hours and it takes less than 2 hours to drive to the airport. It is now 10pm and I am feeling wild and crazy.
